Sir Terence Conran said "I hope that Architecture Week 1998 will raise the quality of debate and, in turn, focus our attention on an appropriate architectural vision for our times."

Launched by Chris Smith MP Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport at BFI IMAX.

The Week began to profile long term projects and issues: Heart and Mind: Artists' presentations at Leeds Teaching Hospitals showcased a series of artists' interventions into the hospital environment.

The Week also began to be a focus opportunity for consultation around a building development. At New Art Gallery Walsall talks and tours were led by artists, architects, directors, pub proprietors and engineers Ð almost everyone who was involved in the design and construction.

BBC Radio Scotland's programme 'Now You're Talking' ran a phone poll for the favourite modern building in Scotland.
