Chris Smith MP, then Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, welcomed the first Week saying, "I am certain that Architecture Week events will engage and increase public interest, elevate the awareness of the architectural issues affecting this country and bring debate about the built environment to the fore."
Jools Holland, musician and TV presenter, also welcomed The Week saying "The more we notice and learn about our surroundings the better equipped we will be to care about ourselves and our fellow citizens."
The RIBA Architect in the House began.
STARchitect talk series included Jonathan Meades, Will Alsop, Eva Jiricna, Edward Cullinan, Ian Ritchie, Terry Farrell, Nigel Coates, Zaha Hadid and Jasper Morrison and a children's STARchitect talk by Piers Gough.
BBC Radio 3 'In Tune' had top architects selecting a piece of music that reminded them of a building.
GLR (now BBC London) architectural broadcaster Maxwell Hutchinson provided special Architecture Week coverage on his two regular programmes.
